There was unfortunately no plan to revisit this spot again but we managed to negotiate a trip back after a zodiac cruise in the morning. After the first one was collected they disappeared and it was unclear whether they had been a seperate species or simply vagrants from the Auckland Islands. In 1973 a population was discovered on Dent Island and following a captive breeding program they were re-introduced to the Campbell group after eradication of the introduced predators in the restoration project that I mentioned in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Wild Places (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tonywhitehead.com\/wildlight\/2020\/02\/wild-places\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wild Places<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tonywhitehead.com\/wildlight\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/CampbellIsland-D5C_0066-web.jpg?resize=960%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11827\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tonywhitehead.com\/wildlight\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/CampbellIsland-D5C_0066-web.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tonywhitehead.com\/wildlight\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/CampbellIsland-D5C_0066-web.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tonywhitehead.com\/wildlight\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/CampbellIsland-D5C_0066-web.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption>Dent Island to the right as seen from the summit of the Col Lyall boardwalk.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Campbell Island Teal are the smallest of the three New Zealand brown Teal group. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Auckland Island Teal (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tonywhitehead.com\/wildlight\/2016\/05\/auckland-island-teal\/\" target=\"_blank\">Auckland Island Teal<\/a> are flightless like the Campbell Island Teal. The third is the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Brown Teal (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tonywhitehead.com\/wildlight\/2019\/08\/brown-teal-pateke\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brown Teal<\/a> which retain the ability to fly.
