I previously posted some initial impressions of the Nikkor Z 28-400mm f4-8 VR<\/a> and then considered it as a potential replacement for the Nikkor Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 VR S<\/a> for a travelling bird photographer wanting to minimise weight. A recent walk highlighted its versatility as a travel lens for a photographer wanting to cover options as well as birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of our local parks has a wisteria growing over a bridge which makes a lovely visit each spring. It is a delight to see and demands a few photos each visit. The pond that the bridge crosses has a regular population of Welcome swallows so I decided to take the Nikon Z8 with the Nikkor Z 28-400mm as a light one lens option to cover all anticipated subjects.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Starting with the wisteria draped bridge, the wider angled range was perfect. From across the pond I could achieve a view of the bridge in context and then zoom in to highlight the flowers and visitors photographing it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Turning my attention to the swallows I managed some decent images in the bright conditions. Darting swallows are one of the most challenging bird in flight subjects and require sharp reflexes and a good dose of luck along with a lens that can acquire and follow focus rapidly. In conditions of a steady breeze from one direction things can be easier but this wasn\u2019t one of those times. Swallows were swirling in every direction with no regular flight path. On the occasions that I did my part and framed and followed a bird the Z8 and 28-400 did its part and locked and followed the subject well.\u00a0The light weight of the Nikon Z8 and Nikkor Z 28-400mm combo makes tracking erratic birds easier than with a heavier rig.<\/p>\n\n\n

Hearing the loud call of a Shining cuckoo I went to search in the nearby trees but found only a Song thrush offering an opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Nikon Z8 with 28-400mm combination is an excellent option for travel with a chance of wildlife including flying birds.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
