A few years ago I purchased an infrared filter from Lifepixel<\/a> and converted a Nikon D70s using the instructions<\/a> on their website. After setting a custom white balance the camera was ready to use for convenient infrared photography and is a useful tool for photographing in sunny midday conditions when the lighting doesn’t lend itself to normal landscape photography.<\/p>\n

In 2009 we took a trip to the UK in July and anticipating that many of my photography opportunities would be in the middle of the day I took the D70sIR body along with a D300 for visible light work. I have quite a backlog of images from the trip still to process and have recently been working through the IR folder. I prefer to initially process the RAW file in Nikon Capture NX2 as it deals with the white balance better than Adobe Lightroom. I save as a 16 bit TIFF and then move into Photoshop for conversion to B&W with Nik SilverEfex Pro2 or treat it as a false colour IR by inverting the red and blue channels. This particular image was taken from a church tower in Oxford and looked nicest to me using an Ambrotype toning in SilverEfex.<\/p>\n
