The black line along the lower edge of the upper mandible is a key differentiating feature between \u00a0Royals and Wanderers.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Albatross taxonomy is a bit of a nightmare. Broadly divided into the Great and Lesser Albatrosses (which in New Zealand are often dubbed Mollymawks). The Great Albatross are divided into Royals (Northern and Southern) and Wanderers under which the Gibson&#8217;s\/Antipodeans (along with Tristan, and Amsterdam) are some sometimes considered part of and sometimes as separate groups. My favourite guidebook (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/worldwide\/news\/complete-guide-antarctic-wildlife-birds-and-marine-mammals-antarctic-continent-and\" target=\"_blank\">A Complete Guide to Antarctic Wildlife by Hadoram Shirihai<\/a>) lumps them all as Wanderers \u00a0but I will stick with the NZBirdsonline current classification treating Antipodeans as a separate species (<em>Diomedea antipodensis<\/em>)\u00a0with the Auckland Island subspecies as Gibson&#8217;s Albatross (<em>Diomedea antipodensis gibsoni<\/em>) as it it more recently updated.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6189\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6189\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tonywhitehead.com\/wildlight\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/GibsonesWanderingAlbatross_D811875-web.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6189 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tonywhitehead.com\/wildlight\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/GibsonesWanderingAlbatross_D811875-web.jpg?resize=800%2C533&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Probable female Gibsons Wandering Albatross. Adams Island is the visible land.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We moved up further into the harbour with the hope of landing to explore old Coastwatcher huts but the wind was too much for Zodiac landings so we changed plan and headed back out again, setting course for Campbell Island with the sea on our starboard quarter giving us a rolling passage further south.<\/p>\n<p>*Andrew Isles specialist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewisles.com\" target=\"_blank\">Natural History Bookshop<\/a> in Melbourne looks like a treasure trove of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewisles.com\/all-stock\/new-books\/\" target=\"_blank\">new<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewisles.com\/all-stock\/secondhand-books\/\" target=\"_blank\">second-hand<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewisles.com\/all-stock\/antiquarian-books\/\" target=\"_blank\">antiquarian books<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewisles.com\/all-stock\/artworks\/\" target=\"_blank\">artworks<\/a>. The website is well worth a visit and I will make a point of visiting the shop when I find myself in Melbourne.
