At 52.5 degrees south, Campbell Island sits at the high end of the middle latitudes but is low on the globe. From a botanical point of view higher latitude equates to higher altitude and Campbell Island is a great example of this with plants usually associated with Alpine environments thriving at sea level. The expected albatross were as lovely as\u00a0imagined but the megaherbs and landscapes were a, partially unanticipated, revelation. The snaggletooth of Dent Island to the right<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dent Island has a special place in the story of Campbell Island. Named for its toothlike appearance, \u00a0it was here that a tiny surviving population of Campbell Island Teal were discovered in 1973.
