It was built between 1963 and 1965 to enable transport of heavy equipment to the construction site of the West Arm Power Station. Due to the heavy loads it was built to a very high standard and remains an excellent road through Fiordland National Park. Disembarking from our boat that had crossed Lake Manapouri we boarded a bus to head over the main divide to Doubtful Sound. A little puff of fill flash gives a much nicer image.
