Ushuaia

Farewell to NG Explorer
Farewell to NG Explorer

Having docked in Ushuaia the previous evening we had not been tempted to leave the ship for an evening in town, rather processing and uploading images to share on the ship’s computer and repacking our bags in preparation for the long trip home. We woke to a dull and damp morning, quite unlike the day of our arrival but apparently more typical. Heading out onto the aft deck we were amazed to find a large cruise ship tied up next to us and towering over us. The National Geographic Explorer had seemed quite substantial but as an expedition ship it is rather tiny compared to a cruise ship.

Breakfast was rather subdued and the weather mirrored our mood as we left the ship farewelling crew who had shared and facilitated our adventure. We spent some time visiting the Prison Museum which didn’t do much to lift the mood and finally headed for the airport and our charter flight back to Buenos Aires, the wild white land behind us seeming almost like a dream now that we were back in the chaos of the modern world.
