Continuing day 4 of our photo safari, we left the lions on our way back to camp, the high key approach working well with herds of giraffe and zebra in the shimmering heat. Retaining colour in the high key images keeps the impression of the sun-scorched grasslands.
With zebras being largely monochrome, it is also an excellent opportunity for accentuating their repeating patterns and shapes with no colour distraction.
Nearing camp we encounter a pair of Kori bustard parading through the grass and I was lucky to capture a series of images as the female caught a praying mantis and passed it on to the male.
After a break at the peak of the day’s heat, our evening drive gave lovely low warm light with a pair of male elephants feeding together.
After the elephants we watched some yawning hippos, this youngster reminding me of the old Cadbury Chomp ads on TV in South Africa.
Returning to camp we again encountered the pair of male elephants contentedly plucking sheaves of grass as the glowing disc of the sun sank behind them.
