Seeing South American Birds for the first time was an exciting aspect of our Antarctica trip. To my eyes familiar with African, Australian, New Zealand and European birds they are quite different with completely different families so very challenging to try and identify in the field even with a Field Guide. We were very lucky to have a morning at Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve with Marcelo Gavensky of Birding Buenos Aires  and saw a large number of new species and managed some reasonable pictures. I must confess the greatest excitement for me were the Hummingbirds of which we saw 2 species. The new South American Birds gallery only has Beunos Aires birds at present but some Patagonian species will be added when I get to process images from the Beagle Channel. My next blog post will cover more details of our BA birding tour with Marcelo.
